Veere is a historic city on the former island of Walcheren.
In 1509, the city was hit by a storm surge. Wolfert VI van Borssele married the Scottish king's daughter Mary Stuart in 1444 and because it became the warehouse of Scottish wool in the Netherlands in 1541, the place flourished. The staple contract, a treaty between Charles V, lord of the Netherlands, and the Scottish king led to the establishment of a large Scottish colony in the small port city. In 1600, 300 of the 3000 inhabitants were Scottish.
They traded in Scottish wool. The ships brought back roof tiles, cloth, horticultural products and weapons to Scotland.
In 1572 Veere, along with most of the other Walcheren towns, joined the revolt against the rule of Alva. The city occupied a prominent position in the Republic.
During the Batavian Republic, Veere became a (poor) fishing port again instead of a trading city.
