The Lieverdje is a statue located at the Spui in Amsterdam. The statue was created by the Amsterdam sculptor Carel Kneulman.
The name Lieverdje was first used by Henri Knap in 1947 in his column Amsterdams Dagboek in the newspaper Het Parool. In this column, he told the story of a little boy about ten years old who had rescued a puppy that had fallen into the canal from drowning. After this first Lieverdje, more such stories followed. The Lieverdje symbolized the street boys of Amsterdam, always looking for mischief but with a golden heart.
