To the northwest of Zwolle lies the area of the IJsseldelta. Very typical here are the villages built on mounds, so that people kept their feet dry when the IJssel overflowed its banks. Sometimes even individual farms are built on separate mounds, which are called huisterpen. The oldest mounds can be found on the riverbanks of the IJssel.
