The National stream and esdorp landscape is located in the drainage area of the Drentsche Aa. The landscape in the drainage area of the Aa has changed little over the past 150 years. You will find many picturesque esdorpen here with numerous Saxon farms.
The river Drentsche Aa is one of the few rivers in the Netherlands whose course has hardly been influenced by humans. In the Netherlands, many streams were straightened for agricultural purposes to facilitate drainage and land cultivation more efficiently. This has hardly occurred in the Drentsche Aa. As a result, many characteristic strips of trees and shrubs or hedgerows on the esdorpen have been preserved from the ancient landscape layout. Some heathlands, including the former military training ground Ballooërveld, were spared from being developed as agricultural land or afforested.
The Drentsche Aa area is one of the best-preserved stream and esdorp landscapes in Western Europe. In 2005, the area, together with the Limburg Geuldal, was declared the most beautiful landscape in the Netherlands.
