Franeker is one of the Frisian Eleven Cities, located in the northwest of the province of Friesland.
It is a town with a history and also a student city. There are quite a few buildings that have left their mark on Franeker: the now-famous Eise Eisinga Planetarium (1778), the old orphanage, the churches, the psychiatric hospital, the corn carriers' house, Bogt fen Gune, Hotel de Doelen, the Koornbeurs, the town hall, the gas factory, the Sternse Slotland, the university, the oil factory, and so on. Quite a lot for such a small town.
Franeker is also called the Wimbledon of the North, which is related to the popular game of kaatsen here. Every year on the 5th Wednesday after June 30, Franeker prepares for the big kaat competition. The competition is attended by the country's 48 best male kaatsers.
