Vondelpark

Vondelpark is a long, elongated city park in Amsterdam, dating back to 1865. The park is located in the Amsterdam-Zuid district, on the border with the Amsterdam-West district. It stretches from Stadhouderskade to Amstelveenseweg. At its opening in 1865, the park was called the Nieuwe Park,[2] commonly known as Wandelpark. After the unveiling in October 1867 of the Vondel Monument, a statue honoring the poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel, the name was changed to Vondelpark. Since 1996, the park has been a national monument.

Vondelpark has become the most famous and most visited park in Amsterdam. In addition to Amsterdammers, many tourists also find their way to this park. Annually, there are an average of about 10 million visits. In the summer months, theater performances and concerts are held in the Openluchttheater.[8] The Vondelbunker had already been mentioned. Located very close by, also at the edge of the park, is the Vondelpark Pavilion, which housed the Film Museum from 1972 until March 2012, and has been open since May 2014 as Vondel CS. There is also the Blue Teahouse, in the style of the Nieuwe Bouwen. On the south side of the park stands the Vondeltuin, a restaurant with a terrace.[9] There is also a Stayokay hostel and a tennis park.

For children, there are various facilities such as: a shallow pool, playgrounds, and sandpits.

The Vondelpark Open golf tournament takes place annually. The Vondelpark Run has been held since 1974. On King's Day, a children's flea market is held in Vondelpark.

In the former Amsterdam Reformed Park Church in the Amsterdam-West district next to the park, the Orgelpark opened in early 2007. Since 1872, the Vondelkerk has stood on Vondelstraat, which runs through the west side of the park.
