Nijkerk ) is a town in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The city had 29,900 inhabitants on January 1, 2021 and is centrally located between the Veluwe and Eemland.Since time immemorial, it has been said that the name comes from 'Nije kercke', which means 'new church'. In the 13th century a chapel or church was built, which was a daughter church of the parish in Putten. To distinguish the church in Putten, this chapel or church was called 'Nije kercke'. For a long time it was believed that this new church was built after a peat fire in 1222, judging by the statement of a Nijkerk pastor who would have seen a foundation deed from 1222. It is thanks to the Nijkerk historian G. Beernick that the year 1222 was mentioned for decades as the year of construction of the 'Nije kercke'. Van Lieburg debunks this story by showing that all the facts surrounding the year 1222 are missing.
