The Steendert

A nature reserve has been developed in the municipality of Neerijnen. It's called De Steendert. The 90-hectare grassland complex on the basins between Est and Ophemert was initially designated as a shelter for geese. But it is now a nature reserve of the Forestry Commission, which is bordered by waterways of the polder district of Tieler- and Culemborgerwaarden. The surrounding banks - about 3.5 kilometres - have been transformed into nature-friendly banks by the polder district and the Rivierenland Purification Board. This means that a large part of the steep banks has been excavated until they slope only slightly. These gentle slopes are good soil for many different flowers and animals. The well-known yellow iris and cattails ('cigar reed') find their place here, but also lesser-known flowers such as swan flower and large hedgehog's head. In other places, the slope will remain a bit steeper, but will run in shallow water (lake berms). This swampy swampy area offers many opportunities for underwater nature.
Together, these measures ensure that the water is ecologically raised to a higher level and thus the self-cleaning capacity is restored. In addition, the waterways with widened nature-friendly banks can collect a lot of rainwater. This is a natural way to prevent the water level in the waterways from becoming too high and having to be controlled by technical interventions.
