Along the banks of the important transport river Vecht are several forts. The river not only served as a transport route, but also as a water supplier to flood areas in the Old and New Dutch Water Line. Strategically important places were protected by these forts. Already in the 16th century there was a redoubt here to protect Weesp. After the digging of the 's-Gravelandse vaart and the construction of a lock, this redoubt became a link in the Old Dutch Water Line. De Vaart was dug to transport excavated sand from the Gooi via the Vecht to Amsterdam. This filled in the swampy area where the canal belt was built. In the second half of the 19th century, the fort was expanded with a tower fort and depots. In 1878 the lock was moved to the north side of the fort and the 's-Gravelandse vaart was routed around the fort.
