Fort Kijkduin is a fort with a North Sea aquarium and a museum in the village of Huisduinen, in the town of Den Helder in North Holland.
The fort was built by order of Napoleon Bonaparte who visited Huisduinen in 1811. He saw great value in the strategic location of Den Helder and wanted to turn it into an important naval port. It was to be "the Gibraltar of the North". The first phase of construction lasted until 1813. It was a masonry redoubt with two bastions on the south side, surrounded by a dry moat. The main building consists of eight covered rooms, also known as 'beech trees'. It is quite a large complex: at the time, the fort could accommodate more than 700 soldiers.
