The Mallumsche Mill is an underwater mill on the Berkel in the hamlet of Mallem in the Dutch municipality of Berkelland, just a few minutes' walk from the village of Eibergen. Besides the corn mill, the mill also operates as a peeling mill. Peeling demonstrations are regularly held on Saturday afternoons.
The earliest mention of this water mill dates back to 1424. The mill belonged to the Hof of Mallem, a fief of the Lord of Borculo. The mill was a mandatory mill or prohibited mill, meaning that farmers in the area were obliged to have their grain milled there. This ensured income for the lord. Several families inhabited the fief and therefore also operated the mill.
After the Havezate Mallum was demolished around 1750, the Mulder house, the adjacent small farm of the miller (Low German: Mulder), was equipped with a luxurious cross building. This allowed the Lord of Mallum to stay in Mallum under comfortable conditions. Even back then, the hof was no longer permanently inhabited but was used for hunting and transit.
The Muldershuis was also a stopping point with a bar for the boatmen of Berkelzompen, who had to wait for their ships to dock. In 1895, the mill complex was transferred to the Water Board of Berkel.
