Around 1900, the area of heathland around the village of Strijbeek was many times larger. Large extractions for agriculture and forestry were not yet an issue at that time. An alternation of dry and wet heathland, flying pines and fens were iconic. The Langven located on the other side of the sandy path where you are now can be seen on the old map of 1900. The fen is still largely in the same shape and condition as then. The old border office is also shown on the old map. Staatsbosbeheer is currently working on restoring the original heathland. As you can see, a lot of land is currently used for agriculture and forestry. Plots with coniferous forest were cut down about 5 years ago on the spot where you are now. By grazing with sheep and cattle we keep these places open, saplings and shrubs do not get a chance to grow up, these are eaten by the animals. Ideal for the heather plant that needs light and space to redevelop vision. The old border office / military police house can still be seen on the Strijbeekseweg.
