The Zwin
About 200 hectares of salt marsh remain in the estuary area.
The Zwin is located in the far southwest of the Netherlands and consists of dunes, mudflats and salt marshes. The chor is bordered on the seaward side by a row of dunes, and on the land side by the International Dike built in 1872. The Zwin channel enters the area through an opening in the dunes. Directly behind the channel estuary are sandy beach plains, which further inland turn into more silty salt marshes. The salt marshes are important as a breeding ground for birds. Redshank, avocet and oystercatcher, among others, breed there. From the seawall, the little egret can be observed almost daily in its search for food in the ponds left behind after the flood. There is a lot of sea lavender on the salt marsh, in Belgium it is called "Zwinblomme". Also numerous on the salt marsh are, among other things, beach cultivation and salt melde. The rare sea beet is common in the flood mark and the yellow horned poppy can be found along the seawall.
