Witch Mountain

The history of Heksenberg begins about 2000 years before our era. Various finds of stone, weapons and shards show that people already lived around the Heksenberg at that time. In Roman times, the current Heerenweg was built, which was part of the road from Coriovallum to Xanten. An old story tells how the tribe of the Hessians marched from Germany towards Coriovallum. The Roman armies attacked them on the approach road to that city, which led to a bloody confrontation. The water of the stream where the battle took place turned red and since then that stream has been called the Red Brook. After the battle, a tomb was erected for the fallen leader of the Hesse. Each warrior had to fill his helmet with sand and pour it out on the grave. This is how the Hessenberg or Heksenberg is said to have come into being.
