Exacts

Exaten is the name of an estate and a castle on that estate, located southeast of Baexem. The estate of 141 hectares is managed by the foundation Het Limburgs Landschap. The castle has been a national monument since 1968. The castle is already mentioned in 1329 under the name "Ixaten". It likely underwent a renovation in 1556, and was expanded around 1593 into a rectangular building with small towers built at the corners on one side. Above the entrance of Exaten Castle, a stone bears the year 1593 with the alliance coat of arms Pollart X of Loon. The building was in a state of disrepair during and after French rule. From 1872, the estate was inhabited by Jesuits, including Georg Michael Pachtler. The estate was designated as a novitiate, where among others, Erich Wasmann became acquainted with the order. From 1927, Franciscans settled on the estate, after which it became a youth care institution from 1946 to 1957, led by the Dominican sisters of Bethany. The sisters left for Horn in 1959, after which the Franciscans returned. Later, a training school for the national police was established there, providing training for the Mobile Unit among others. The castle was sold in 1997 to the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers and is now used as an asylum seeker center.
