The Goois Lyceum is a general special lyceum for secondary education at Vossiuslaan 2a in Bussum. The school was founded in 1911 as 'Gooische Hoogere Burgerschool' and offers havo, vwo, technasium and gymnasium.
On August 26, 1910, the 'Vereniging Gooische Hoogere Burgerschool' was founded, because there was no school for higher secondary education available in Bussum. The founders, united in the Founding Committee headed by the architect C. Kruisweg, applied to the State to start a State HBS, but it was refused. After this, a request was made to the municipality, but because the Catholic and Protestant councillors were in the majority, the request to start a public school was rejected. This left only the option of starting a particularly neutral school on private initiative. The then mayor of Bussum, Herman Theodoor s'Jacob, was appointed honorary chairman of the school board. The foundation stone for the original building, designed by Kruisweg itself, was laid on 21 January 1911, and bears the text 'Knowledge is power'. The main entrance and the schoolyard were then located on the Vondellaan, at the rear of the current building. On September 11, 1911, the first school year started as Gooische Hoogere Burgerschool, Gooische HBS for short, under the direction of the first director, Dr. Gerbert Henri Fabius. It was not until the mid-fifties that the Gooise HBS began to lose its elitist character. After the school was expanded in 1964 with a gymnasium department, the name was changed to Goois Lyceum and the school board was renamed Vereniging Gooise Scholengemeenschap. The current building dates from 1977 and was designed by the architect Rutger Dirk Bleeker. The building is an example of the moderate functionalism for which the architect has become known, with clean lines, angular shapes and a number of box-shaped volumes, supported by concrete columns.
