Ulft Castle

Castle Ulft was located in the east of the village of Ulft of the same name in the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek in the Dutch province of Gelderland.
The earliest mention dates back to 1236 when the estate was described as a Gelderland fief in the old lordship of Ulft. It was built as a motte, strategically situated north of the mouth of the Aa-strang into the Oude IJssel. During the Eighty Years' War, the castle was besieged several times. Notable inhabitants included the von Heeckeren family and later Wilhelm IV of Bergh with his family. After his death, the family retreated to the Huis Bergh located to the west. Castle Ulft was mainly used as a hunting lodge and fell into neglect. In 1892, the remains of the ruins were leveled, and a farmhouse was built on the site in 1896.
