Buren is surrounded by beautiful historic city walls, which have led to the city being declared a protected cityscape today. One of the city gates has stood the test of time: the Buitenhuizenpoort.
The gate forms the entrance to the city on the west side. The name 'Huizerpoort' is said to come from the castle or house of Buren, which was located outside the city directly opposite the gate. The gate was built around 1400, together with the other fortifications. A restoration followed in 1618-1619. Travellers who wanted to enter the city first had to pass through the Hamey Gate, after which they reached the Huizerpoort via a bridge over the canal. In 1629 this Hamey gate was rebuilt. The wooden bridge was made of stone in 1730.
