Haanrade is a hamlet that belongs to Kerkrade and is located north of this city, near the Worm, which forms the border river with Germany. Haanrade is located directly northeast of the Kerkraad district of Chevremont.
East of Haanrade runs the Worm, which forms the border with Germany. To the south is a spoil heap from a former coal mine. Adjacent to this is the Bear Forest, a nature reserve of 24 hectares with dry hay meadows, deciduous and coniferous forest. This area is home to lime-loving plants, such as the thistle. North of Haanrade is the Carisborg nature reserve, also 24 hectares. This is the former Anna lignite quarry, which was later planted and now consists of an alternation of deciduous forest and hay meadows. There is also a petting zoo here.
