Pump Station Noord-Kethelpolder

At the Noord-Kethelpolder pumping station in the municipality of Midden-Delfland, significant work has been done in recent months. After renovation, the pumping station is future-proof. This way, we keep the water in the Noord-Kethelpolder, on the border of Schiedam, Rotterdam, and Delft, at the right level.

The pumps and the duckweed remover have been refurbished, and the controls have been updated. The fences have been repaired, and the concrete and paving have been refreshed. Above all, the pumping station has been made passable for fish.

A sufficient variety of fish in the water contributes to good water quality. However, it's not always easy for fish to reach other areas due to obstacles like pumping stations, locks, and weirs. By creating a fish passage, fish can swim past such obstacles. During the renovation of the Noord-Kethelpolder pumping station, a fish passage was incorporated to allow fish from the Schie to enter the polder. For this, we created a fish lift, wherein the fish are attracted by the water from the lure pump and are trapped in a sealable tube. Then, the tube is opened on the polder side, and the fish slide into the polder. To swim out of the polder, the fish simply follow the current through the fish-friendly pumps back to the Schie.

Fish can now migrate into the polder from the Schie and swim back. This expands the habitat of the fish, which is beneficial for water quality and biodiversity.
