For many motorists driving on the A12, it is a familiar sight. Like a beacon, this 'mountain' lies along the Utrecht – Arnhem route. Because this hill was never forested, it has always remained very visible. The hill is made up of river sand that was deposited here but was pushed up during the last Ice Age and remained here as a hill. There once stood a castle, but when a new list of knightly estates was drawn up in 1609, the name of the castle was no longer mentioned. Research has shown that agricultural activities have taken place on the Emminkhuizerberg for centuries.
