The Wilhelmina Lock is a lock in the dammed Maas near Andel. [1] The lock was built around 1896 in the 800 m long dam that separates the Meuse and Waal rivers; the lock ensures that shipping between Maas and Waal remains possible. The lock (and the dam) also form a primary flood defence and have a so-called 'retaining height' of 6.8 m NAP. The lock is still in use and is managed by Rijkswaterstaat Zuid-Holland, Waterdistrict Merwede & Maas. [2]
This is the only impeller lock in the Netherlands with a 'green chamber', which means that the walls of the lock chamber are covered with grass. On 18 August 1904, Queen Wilhelmina unveiled the monument that had been erected in remembrance. This memorial is a national monument. [3] In the 1990s, the lock was mechanised and various other overhauls and maintenance work took place. [4] In July 2011, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management commissioned the Wilhelmina Lock to be made more energy-efficient. To this end, the control building will be insulated; the gully lighting is improved; the interior lighting will be replaced by energy-efficient lighting, and the mercury lamps on the site will be replaced by LED lamps.
