Pumping station Eemnes

The Eemnes pumping station dates from 1880 and is located on the Eemnesservaart in the Dutch province of Utrecht. Originally, the drainage of the Eemnesserpolder was via several locks, including the Eemnesser lock. The water in the polder of Eemnes is 70 cm. lower than the water in the Eem. The difference in height is bridged for shipping by a lock. From 1791 onwards, the polder was drained by a water mill next to the lock, on the spot where the engineer's house is located. This mill was replaced by a steam pumping station around 1880 because the capacity of the mill was too small. In 1921 this steam pumping station was converted into an electric pumping station designed by the Amsterdam engineering firm W.C. and K. de Wit. The new 'cattail' pumps pumped the water over the dike. In 1993, the pumping station function was taken over by submersible pumps in new pump cellars. The joint pumps can move 135,000 litres per minute. The pumping station was restored in 2006. The old pump installation with the associated electrical installation has been preserved and is demonstrated several times a year.
