Huys ten Donck

The Huys ten Donck is located between the villages of Bolnes and Slikkerveer in the municipality of Ridderkerk and is surrounded by a 22-hectare park in the style of an English landscape, called the Donckse Bos. Of this, about 10 hectares is parkland with an unobstructed view from the house. The estate also includes a coach house, a wood shed, a tithing house, a farm, and a family burial site. The estate has been owned by the Van Zoelen family since 1676. There was a small castle built in 1616. In 1702, Catharina van Zoelen married Cornelis Groeninx, thus establishing the Groeninx van Zoelen lineage. Their descendants still reside on the estate. In 1746, a new house was built on the foundations of the former castle at the behest of the Rotterdam mayor and lord of Ridderkerk, Mr. Otto Groeninx van Zoelen, in the style of Louis XIV. This was named the Huys ten Donck.
