Ferry service Gouderak-Moordrecht

The is a ferry connection across the Hollandse IJssel between the towns of Gouderak and Moordrecht. The service transports pedestrians, cyclists and passenger cars. A crossing by car costs € 2.50 (as of 2022). The municipality of Krimpenerwaard has the ferry right, which continues until 2019.

The ferry service is operated by two ferries: the Vegomo 5 and the Vegomo 6. Vegomo is an abbreviation of Veer Gouderak Moordrecht. These boats are head loaders: they only have one tailgate and the wheelhouse is located behind the road surface. So the boat has to be reversed during the crossing and cars have to drive forward on the boat and backwards off - or vice versa. The capacity is two passenger cars. Until 20 August 2011, two ferries were operated during rush hour, while one ferry operated outside rush hour. Then there was a new ferry, the Resilience, with a capacity of three passenger cars, and two tail lifts. In 2010, the province of Zuid-Holland paid half of the purchase costs of this new ferry, 273,000 euros.

Due to the arrival of the new Gouderak bridge over the Hollandsche IJssel near Gouda, in the N207, this new ferry was no longer profitable, although the detour via the bridge is more than 5 kilometers. In 2013 this ferry was sold again for the Aalst-Veen ferry service, where it was used on 18 July 2013. Ferry service resumed with the Vegomo 5 and Vegomo 6.

After it became known that the operator was still suffering losses and wanted to stop the ferry service, a petition was started on the initiative of the residents of Moordrecht and Gouderak for the preservation of the ferry. As of 1 June 2016, Veerdienst Schoonhoven BV has provisionally taken over the operation of the ferry connection until 1 June 2017. Due to its social relevance, both the Municipality of Zuidplas and the Municipality of Krimpenerwaard contribute to the operation of the ferry.
