Old Salvius Church

The old parish church St. Salvius is located on the north side of the village of Limbricht, near Castle Limbricht. The church has been built in several phases since the ninth century, shortly after the death of Saint Salvius in 801. The original wall made of maas stones has mostly been preserved. In the eleventh and late thirteenth century, a choir was added. Inside, the Romanesque elements of the choir are clearly visible: round windows and arches under the roof edge.
The history of the old Salvius church dates back to the end of the tenth century or the beginning of the eleventh century. The north wall of the small church built at that time remains made of maas stones. During a restoration between 1977 and 1984, wall paintings were found in the choir, the oldest wall paintings ever discovered in a village church in the Netherlands. These paintings from around 1300 can still be viewed today. A yellow copper box containing pieces of bone from Saint Salvius was also found.
The old Salvius church is one of the wonder locations on the Route of Wonder.
