The High German Synagogue

Only the street name Jodenkerksteeg still reminds us that there used to be a synagogue here, behind the corner house. Here you see the interior of this synagogue, which was in use from 1759 to 1927. The Holy Ark is currently located in the Utrecht synagogue. The rabbi lived in the corner house.

A large part of the Maarssen population was Jewish in the 17th and 18th centuries. With their trade and wealth, they largely contributed to the golden age of Maarssen during that time.

When the city of Utrecht granted permission to Jews to settle there in 1789, many Jews moved towards the big city. In 1923, the Maarssen High German Jewish community was incorporated into the Utrecht community. The synagogue was demolished four years later, and two residential houses were built on this site (Diependaalsedijk 40-42). During restoration work in 2002, a mikvah was found here, a ritual bath.
