The Polar Bear monument on the Kade in Roosendaal is a monument commemorating the liberation and liberators of Roosendaal in 1944.
Already a few years before the monument was unveiled, work was already being done on the arrival of the liberation statue. Initially, a somewhat smaller image was intended for the Quay Bridge. Nevertheless, a larger picture emerged, which meant that the costs were higher than expected. In 1959 there was a discussion going on in the city council whether the statue should still be built. The municipality of Roosendaal had to cut back and some members of the council also wondered whether the liberation was still alive enough to place a monument for it. In the end, the credit for the monument was granted.
Another discussion was about where the monument would be located. Because the statue had become larger than initially intended, the Quay Bridge was no longer an option. For this reason, the New Market and the Westrand were mentioned as options. Along this the English had liberated Roosendaal. In the end, the Quay was chosen near the Kadebrug along which the English entered Roosendaal.
