Faliezuster Monastery

This beautifully restored building is a remnant of the Faliezuster Monastery. It dates back to the 17th century, making it over 350 years old. The monastery was founded in the 14th century and had Saint Catherine as its patroness. The sisters were usually referred to as faliezusters, after their veil (compare English veil, French voile), and were engaged in caring for the sick.
The falie, feil, or feijlen sisters settled in Maastricht around 1470, with permission from the Bishop of Liège, Louis of Bourbon. The sisters established themselves in the Jeker quarter, close to the city wall. In 1590, the monastery (or convent) was referred to as Saint Catherine Bongart, later Saint Catharinadal.
The current monastery dates from 1647; the monastery chapel was demolished around 1865. At the time of the monastery's dissolution in 1796, there was a prioress, five sisters, and a novice living there.
