Groeneveld Mill Schipluiden

The Groeneveldse mill in Schipluiden was built in 1719 to replace an earlier wooden mill that had burned down after being struck by lightning. The mill is one of the few remaining water mills in the municipality of Midden-Delfland. Since 1977, the mill has been owned by the Hoogheemraadschap of Delfland and, along with a screw pump, pumps the Groeneveldse polder. Until 1960, the polder was exclusively pumped by wind power. After the construction of a pumping station, the mill was shut down. The scoop wheel, which raises the water by 1.90 meters, was equipped with an electric motor in the early 1980s, which still functions today. The Groeneveldse mill is visible from a great distance and can be viewed when it is in operation. The mill is painted white on the land side.

Inside the Groeneveldse mill, there is a dwelling that was inhabited until the 1970s. The miller's house contains, among other things, beds and a potbelly stove. The tiled wall is made up of replicas of the original Delft blue tiles. Visitors can get an impression of the living conditions of a miller's family. In the 1940s and 1950s, a miller, his wife, and ten children lived here. The summer house, which was resided in during the summer, was demolished during the restoration of the mill due to its dilapidated condition. The house next to the mill, which is inhabited by the miller and his family, is located on the site of the original summer house.
