The Folkingestraat is a street in the city center of Groningen. The street runs from the Vismarkt, corner Akerkhof to the Zuiderdiep.
The street is named after the Folkerdinghe family, who lived at the corner with the Akerkhof. The street already existed in the 11th century. The street name was mentioned for the first time in 1439. Also known as Volteringestraat.
In the 19th and 20th centuries up to 1942, the street was the center of the Jewish neighborhood. In that year, 2,450 Jewish residents of Groningen were deported, and in the following year, over 300 more. (According to population statistics, the city had 2,850 Jewish residents in 1941 who met the definitions used by the occupier to qualify for deportation. Only about ten survived the concentration camps. Relatively few others went into hiding.) In the Folkingestraat, there were 191 Jewish residents. The last part of the Folkingestraat (breakthrough to the Zuiderdiep in 1667) was called the Jodenstraatje from 1756 to 1890, also known as Sjoelgasse, previously Kleine Folkingestraat.
