Boom and Bosch

Until 2011, this country estate was the town hall of Breukelen. The property was transferred to the municipality of Stichtse Vecht during the municipal reorganization and is still in use for municipal services.
The 18th-century side wings were demolished in the 19th century. The photo shows what that looked like. During a restoration in 1984 they were rebuilt again.

Boom en Bosch was built in 1675 and was one of the approximately 200 country estates that arose along the Vecht in the 17th and 18th centuries. With the construction of a summer house on the rivers that were easily accessible from the city, Amsterdam canal house residents fled the warm summers in the smelly city. Here they could enjoy fresh air, space and fresh food.

At the end of the 18th century, the economy declined and about 3/4 of the country estates along the Vecht were demolished. From the 70s of the last century, the tide changed. Private individuals bought the neglected country estates and restored them. With 72 country estates, Stichtse Vecht is now one of the municipalities with the most country estates in the Netherlands.
