Graauw was already mentioned at the end of the 13th century. In the 19th-century church of the village hangs a bell that symbolizes in a special way the ups and downs of the region. It is the bell of the former village of Namur, which drowned in a flood in 1715. Now the village is covered in a thick layer of mud in the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe, which is about two kilometers away as the crow flies. This 3000-hectare nature reserve consists mainly of mudflats, salt marshes and gullies and offers a permanent, safe habitat for numerous breeding birds and a varied flora. If you want to explore the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe, it is best to be guided because the bottom and the sudden rising tide can be very treacherous.
