The Witte Veen is a particularly extensive nature reserve of approx. 315 ha. between Buurse and the German border. In the past, this raised bog area was a popular border crossing for smugglers. Only a small part of this former vast area has been preserved and consists of rugged grasslands, pools, heathland, forest and raised bogs. Rare plant species such as bell gentian, peat fluff, aarig woolly grass and lavender heath grow on the White Peat. Since 1981, the Witte Veen has been owned by Natuurmonumenten. The aim is to restore the old character where possible. Scottish highlanders keep the area open and thus provide variation in plant growth.
