Rosarium Boskoop

In July 1933, the official opening took place by E. Guldemond, alderman of Boskoop, and the park was named Guldemondplantsoen. At the same time, the garden was handed over to the municipality of Boskoop. The reason for the creation of the rosarium was a horticultural exhibition as a work creation project to combat unemployment. The designer was engineer S.G.A. Doorenbos, director of the municipal parks service in The Hague.

The central part of the Guldemondplantsoen is completely filled with roses (bushes) and is thus a rosarium. The design of the rosarium is in a sober New Architectural style. Every year, about 2,600 roses (in approximately 160 rose varieties) bloom from May to October. Some of them are so old that their names are no longer known. Between the rose beds, especially cluster roses and tea hybrids, there is a lawn. In addition to the roses, there are also perennial plants, shrubs, and trees planted. Each year, about ten outdated rose varieties are removed and replaced with new ones. These new varieties come from breeders around the world. They crossbreed and cultivate new varieties and donate them to Rosarium Boskoop. Since its establishment, the layout has remained unchanged, and the pavilion with six columns and a spherical roof from 1936 is still original. The fountain in the pavilion has disappeared, the sundial is no longer complete, and the wooden pergolas and rose arches have been renewed. The garden does not have a sprinkler system. Under-drainage ensures that the plants can absorb enough moisture from the soil. In 1997, the park was completely renovated by G.J. Nottelman and it is now a national monument.
