Hay meadows, reed beds, mudflats, mudflats, river banks, hawthorn hedges and swamp forest: the Everdinger Waarden are very versatile. Between 2000 and 2006, the floodplains were excavated for the purpose of dike reinforcement. When the last sand truck drove away, it was nature's turn. In spring and summer, the reed beds in the Everdinger Waarden buzz with reed warblers, wood warblers, bluethroats and other small songbirds. On the mudflats and along the banks of the rivers, waders dribble, frantically looking for food: whitebirds, sandpipers, greenshanks and avocets. Meadow birds that breed in the surrounding meadow areas, such as redshank and black-tailed godwit, will also find a richly set table.
Every year, Utrechts Landschap removes the young willow storage. If we don't, there will be a willow forest in no time. Utrechts Landschap uses Hungarian raka sheep to graze the willow shoots. We mow the hay meadow after 15 July. Furthermore, we do little in terms of management: nature can take its course in the Everdinger Waarden.

Waders regularly wander in the area that normally only stay on the coast. During their trek across the Netherlands, they regain their strength in the Everdinger Waarden. Birdwatchers saw the Pied Sandpiper, Lesser Sandpiper, Red Knot, and Curlew. Sometimes even the scarce temminck sandpiper scurries along the muddy banks. In the winter months it is one waterfowl festival. Tufted ducks, pochards, wigeons, goldeneye and sometimes even nuns are observed.
Plant
When it comes to plants, the Everdinger Values are also full of surprises. The field sage is doing better and better along the river banks. The hay meadow, near Fort Everdingen, looks yellow with the large rattle in June. Undoubtedly, we will encounter many botanical surprises in the Everdinger Waarden in the near future.
