Coal was also referred to as 'The Black Gold'. Coal was the most important fuel for cooking and heating your home. Quite a few people worked in the Limburg mines last century. Miners, as they were called. And that work - deep underground - was no picnic.

They had to crawl, it was extremely hot, and there was an awful lot of noise. Those miners looked pitch black from all that dust. Very heavy work indeed, with large machines and even underground trains. At the Coal Mine Valkenburg, you can see how it all was. Where coal comes from. There, real miners will tell you their strong stories, and how it all went. They also show a film. Deep in the caves, you get an idea of what it was like in the Limburg mines in the past. Opening hours:
April 1 to November 1 guided tours every hour between 10:00 - 17:00
November 1 through Christmas vacation guided tours at 12, 13:30, and 15:00.
After the Christmas vacation until April 1 Monday to Friday at 14:00.
During the weekend and spring vacation guided tours at 12, 13:30, and 15:00.
The duration of the tour is approximately 75 minutes.

The Coal Mine is closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Carnival Sunday and Monday.

Groups are welcome by appointment from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Evening tours are also possible.
