Landgoed De Zwaluwenberg is an estate in Hilversum, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The estate is located at Utrechtseweg 223-225. The mansion is used by the Inspector General of the Armed Forces and his staff. In the Eighty Years' War, a lot of timber was cut down and heathlands were created. Since the Middle Ages, the Erfgooiers had the right to use these lands. In 1837 something special happened: the heathlands were privatized. The Heirs became owners of two-thirds of the area and the rest sold the state to private individuals. The new, private owners had two objectives with the estate, firstly money investment and exploitation through the production of agricultural crops, especially wood and secondly recreation in the summer months. In the nineteenth century, a complete forest was planted again with birch, beech, oak and pine.
