The Rembrandt Monument is a 19th-century memorial in honor of the painter Rembrandt van Rijn at the Rembrandt Square in Amsterdam. It is the oldest still-existing statue in Amsterdam and was the first statue for a visual artist in the Netherlands. The writer Johannes Immerzeel wrote his Eulogy on Rembrandt in 1838, in which he advocated for the erection of a statue for the painter. Immerzeel was asked by the Amsterdam city council to explore the possibilities for a statue. This may have prompted the sculptor Louis Royer to create a design. In his design, he depicted Rembrandt seated and drawing, with a sketchbook in his left hand and a drawing pencil in his right hand. Rembrandt sits on a crate, with the initials RVR, against which a palette with brushes is leaning. Immerzeel informed Royer in November 1840 that he wanted to work towards the execution of his design, but passed away the following year.
