Wolfhager Forest

The Wolfhagerbos is a nature reserve in the Kakkertdal north of Schinnen in the Dutch municipality of Beekdaelen. The 9-hectare forest is managed by the Limburg Landscape Foundation. This foundation acquired the site after the previous owner industrial group DSM donated it in 1992, in honour of the 60th anniversary of Het Limburgs Landschap. The forest consists mainly of moist poplar and willow forest. Underneath the area is a vast system of coal industry tunnels. Due to subsidence of this system, the area has become lower, making the area rather humid. This effect is further enhanced by the fact that the area is intersected by the river Kakkert. The area is often visited by amphibians who can easily reach the forest through an amphibian tunnel. The area is publicly accessible to walkers and cyclists.
