St. James the Multiple Church

This church is named after Saint James the Greater: Jacobus Maior (the Greater) and is part of the parish of St. Mary Magdalene (created from a merger of the parishes of De Levensbron and St. Benedictus).

Every Friday at 9:00 a.m. the rosary is areas and a service at 9:30 a.m.

Patron saint:
Patron saint of pilgrims, knights, orphans, retirement homes and dozens of other professions. He was invoked against rheumatism, for good weather and a good harvest.

Characterize:
James is usually depicted as a pilgrim with shell, pilgrim's staff, gourd, hat, shoulder cloak and travel bag. Sometimes the shell is tied to the staff or on a garment.

He is also introduced as an apostle. He usually has bare feet and a scroll with him. In addition, you often see a knife, sword or a shopping hook.

Finally, he is sometimes depicted as a crusader on horseback. Here he wears a shield and sword, but usually he still wears his pilgrim clothing. His sacraments are sometimes underfoot by his white horse.

Story:
Jacobus Maior was the older brother of the apostle John. Together with him and Peter, he was present on Mount Tabor. James worked as a fisherman and lived on Lake Gennesaret. After Jesus' death, he is said to have preached near present-day Santiago de Compostela. When he returned to the Holy Land, he was the first apostle to be martyred by beheading in 44. His remains are said to have been buried in Spain and Compostela became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Christian world.
