Wickenburgh

Wickenburgh is located west of the village of 't Goy, in the rural area of Houten. Wickenburgh is mentioned for the first time in 1300, then under the name Westenstein. But there are indications that the estate was founded in Carolingian times (751-987) and is therefore much older.
Initially, Wickenburgh must have been a defensible house and farm, but in the course of the 17th century it slowly but surely grew into a country estate. In the centuries that followed, the estate took on its current form under the Wttewaall family, who have owned the estate since 1741. The house was converted into a mansion with classicist features, a garden in English landscape style was laid out with two driveways, meadows and a vegetable garden. In 1814 the function of the farm disappeared for good. One of the eye-catchers of the estate is the striking dovecote on an island, which, like the estate, is one of the oldest of its kind in the province of Utrecht. The first design of the dovecote dates back to the 16th century, a period in which a dovecote was a symbol of wealth. After all, the construction of such a dovecote was considered a privilege for which certain conditions, such as owning a minimum amount of land, had to be met.
