The Karpermeer was created through sand extraction in 1962 on a piece of farmland. The Emperor's stream flows right through it.
The extracted sand was used for the construction of the Hameland Route.
Due to the inflow of the stream, a fish-rich lake was formed, including carp. Thus, the name Carp Lake originated.
Many people who saw the water drove along the Hameland Route and asked if it was allowed to fish. These fishermen also wanted to be able to camp, and thus the idea for a camping site was born. Eventually, this property was no longer suitable for agriculture.
In the early seventies, tents and caravans were replaced by motorhomes.
In the first years, a fries stand was built for the fishermen.
In 1972, this fries stand was replaced by a permanent building from which the current restaurant emerged. This restaurant was used by camping guests, but also for parties and passersby. In 1991, the restaurant was destroyed by a fire and then completely rebuilt.
In the first years, the motorhome park and the restaurant were operated by the Houwers family. Since 1985, the restaurant has been run by third parties.
