Barlage

Barlage is a hamlet in the municipality of Stadskanaal in the Dutch province of Groningen. Near Vlagtwedde is a region with the same name. For that reason, it is also referred to as Onstwedder Barlage. The name of the place means approximately birch forest.

Soil findings indicate habitation in the early Iron Age around 1000 BC. The neck ring was found in 1919 or 1920 in the peat near Barlage and was probably a votive offering, which according to archaeologist Jay Butler was placed in the peat around 500 BC. It is a simple bronze imitation of a spiral ring with two cast bronze fittings and a piece of amber. The find indicates that there was still possible habitation in this area around that time, which was increasingly enclosed by peat. The area was then uninhabited for about 1000 years before being re-colonized in the early Middle Ages from Emsland.
