Old or Martini Church

The Oude or Martinikerk in the Dutch town of Voorburg is one of the two district churches of the Protestant Municipality of Voorburg and belongs to the Protestant Church of the Netherlands. It is the oldest church building in Voorburg.Around 1200 a small hall church was built next to the house of craftsman Dirk van Voorburgh. It is possible that there used to be a wooden church, but that has never been proven. The church was dedicated to St. Martin and in 1275 there was a 'parish of St. Martin'. Around 1460 the tower was built with a spire of twenty meters. The weather vane has a standing lion. There were several altars, there were many stained glass windows and many statues of Mary, of Christ on the cross, of St. Nicholas and of St. George. The Iconoclasm put an end to this.
