The Princess Beatrix Locks
In 1931, the construction of a new canal from Amsterdam to Tiel, the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, was ordered. At the level of Jutphaas, a branch towards the Lek was created east of Vreeswijk with two adjacent locks equipped with lift gates. This new lock was officially opened on March 23, 1938. It brought a dramatic decline in prosperity for Vreeswijk. Shipping now passed far outside the village. Shopkeepers and traders lost their livelihoods and left the village. All efforts were made to establish a new 'shopping center' at the new lock, where the industrial area Het Klooster was to rise in the near future, but the plan failed. Rijkswaterstaat refused all applications for permits.
