Under the Church Tower

With the Archeo Route Limburg you will discover the stories behind Limburg's history and archaeology. The most important places of this route are marked with a work of art in the shape of a spear.
The Netherlands has only one church that has been consecrated by a pope, and this is in South Limburg, in the center of Voerendaal. It was only since the sixteenth century that Voerendaal has grown into a lively town; before that, this St. Lawrence Church stood lonely, but proud on a central point between large estates.
On August 10, 1049, Pope Leo IX consecrated the church. The charter, from which we know this historical event, is the first document that mentions Voerendaal.
Location: The spear is located in the center next to the church and opposite house number 26 in the stone-covered park with benches.
