Afrikahuis

The 'new' Saint Willibrord church is one of the ugliest buildings in the city, at least in my opinion. The brutalist concrete structure is undergoing a reevaluation, so when the building is renovated, it may be a wonder of cooling architecture. The Catholic parish here in Zuid had this church built to replace the immense Saint Willibrord Buiten de Veste on the Amstel designed by Cuypers. This building dates back to 1968 and was designed by Joop van Stigt. The architect was born nearby. He apprenticed under Aldo van Eijck, who constructed buildings using modules. You can see that here too: flat surfaces and staircases alternate.
As early as 1972, the parish wanted to get rid of the building. From 1994 to 2008, African Catholic communities used the church, hence the name Afrikahuis. Now it stands empty, but it is a national monument.
