Fausto Guedes Teixeira (Lamego, October 11, 1871 – Lamego, July 13, 1940) was an idealistic poet from Lamego known for his sad, contemplative and melancholic lyrics, which became known as the Portuguese Musset .
He studied law at the University of Coimbra where he lived with the generation of symbolist poets of the time. As a republican he lived for a time in Brazil . He was an idealistic and eclectic poet with a neo-romantic and symbolist bent. His main theme was love , but he also sang for oppressed peoples and praised political circumstances that he considered worthy of homage. Although highly praised, the harmony of his compositions sometimes abuses poetic license , but the whole of his poetic output has earned him lasting acclaim.
He made his debut with Náufragos (1892) and his major works are Carta a um Poeta (1899) and Sonetos de Amor (1922). A definitive edition of his complete works, in two volumes, was published posthumously under the title O Meu Livro (1941). The poet and publicist João de Barros described him in these terms: Fausto Guedes is a poet of all times. He provided numerous coplas to Augusto Hilário , one of the great cultural purveyors of Coimbra fado.
The Lamego Museum houses the personal collection of Casa do Parque , his home for the last twenty years of his life, with a significant collection of objects belonging to Fausto Guedes Teixeira, donated by him to the museum as a result of his friendship with the institution's first director, João Amaral. These objects are permanently exhibited in a room in the museum.
