This is a fairly large square in the western part of the historic centre. It is so called because the church and the House of Mercy are located here; the Court of Appeal is also located here.
It is a rectangular paved square with a fountain in the centre (although the square is not pedestrianised), against which stands a monument to Afonso Henriques . The buildings around it have tiled facades and large galleries. The back of the square extends to the right, forming a small garden where the João Franco Memorial stands, from which the square takes its current name.
There is also a small chapel-oratory with a sculpture representing one of the Stations of the Cross.
